SEASONS OF BENGAL
There
are Six Seasons in West Bengal. Summer, the rains, autumn, late autumn, winter
and spring. Seasons change in cyclic order. Our Bengali year begins with summer.
It is the first season. It covers the month of April and May. The sun shines
brightly and people suffer from heat. Trees and plants wither and Ponds and
wells dry up. Then comes the second season which is called rainy season. It
extends from June to August. The rainy season is both pleasant and unpleasant
at the same time. People suffer from cold and fever in this season. There is a
heavy downpour and the condition of the slum dwellers become miserable. Ponds,
tanks rivers are filled with water. Rain helps agriculture. But heavy rain may
bring flood. Next comes autumn. It is the season of sweet moonshine. The fields
are full of paddy, and specially it is a season of several festival like Durga
Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Diwali etc. Next
come late autumn which is called Hemanta. It extends from mid October to mid
December. It announces the dawn of winter. Next comes winter season. It is the
season of cold cough and warm clothes. It is a painful seasons to the poor, and
also a season of Christmas, flowers, fruits, festival, fair and function. Vegetables
like beam, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage are available in plenty. If Winter
comes can Spring be far behind ? Spring
is the loveliest season which is called the king of seasons also. There is no heat, no cold and no rain. All
seasons are useful to mankind and to nature.
